Energy Industry in Western Garfield County

Western Garfield County has a rich history in the nation’s pursuit of energy-fuels development. The Roan Plateau, internationally known for its potential for oil shale development, is in Rifle’s back yard, and the Piceance Basin contains a wealth of deep natural gas reserves and potential for shale-gas development. The region also has historic roots in uranium and coal mining.

Our communities celebrate their energy history and recognizes their on-going role in the region, and nation, to “bridge the energy gap”. As a forerunner in natural gas development, Rifle and its surrounding communities are working to become leaders in the development and deployment of renewable energy sources and new energy technologies.

Energy has been a large part of Western Garfield County’s economy for the last fifty years. Though some facets of the local energy economy have exhibited boom and bust cycles, the presence of rich natural gas fields in the Piceance area promises a steady influx of revenue and industry activity in the region.

Community Counts

Community Counts is a program developed to help reduce the impacts of the energy industry, and improve the relationship between employees, contractors and the neighboring communities.
